Australian authorities have embraced new international guidelines to make the use of MySpace and other social networking internet communities more safe. This should be interesting, we at MyFlakes have been waiting for sensible measures for ages.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) was a key figure in the development of the online safety guidelines, which was launched in the UK House of Lords. Those bad ass pimps in the House of Lords are a fun bunch we can be glad they got involved.
The social networking online safety guidelines recommend that profiles belonging to members under 18 be made private by default.
That does not sound like fun, getting MySpace friend requests from other immature dumb teenager members. Kids do not like to be controlled and will only rebel against it.
Oh, I have a genius idea, I will lie about my age and get full access to all the glitter graphics, all the pimped out profiles with photos of hot chicks showing off their brand new breast implants!
Which healthy 16 year old boy is not going to do that?
The new social networking online safety guidelines also call for an improved system for reporting of cyber bullying or other antisocial behavior.
Social networks are THE place to be antisocial. If those antisocial members would not be antisocial they would have real friends and partners rendering them way too busy to cyber bully others. MySpace is a great place to be anonymous or not and give hell to the world.
MySpace is a great place to vent frustrations, fill a page with hate (and oddly glitter graphics at the same time).
I have read the following opening lines on several profiles: I HATE HATERS! Oxymoron or just a moron? You decide.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) chairman Chris Chapman said the guidelines were an important development.
"The guidelines aim to ensure the online social networking experience remains a positive one by providing good practice recommendations to online social networking providers to assist them in providing proper protections for their users".
I guess this is the point let's write new laws, let's pretend we are doing something even if it makes no sense or not even remotely realistic in today's society.
Kids are growing up so fast has never been more true. The 18 year old age limit is a colossal joke and shows how out of touch the UK House of Lords and the Australian authorities are.
More from a university professor on why taking MySpace away from children is a bad idea.
